Phrases to Avoid as a Photo and Prop Stylist

Jul 22, 2023

When working as a Photo Stylist  ~ be confident. Don't be shy when sharing your creative and styling thoughts to (& with) the Creative Team (Photographer, Art Director, Creative Director).

"Non" confident phrases to be mindful of either in a Pre-Production, Creative Meeting or in the Photo Studio or On Location:

▪️ Maybe, we . . .
▪️ I’m not sure of this, but . . .
▪️ I kinda think . . .
▪️ I’m just throwing it out there . . .

Have a suggestion, thought, idea?  Be confident in expressing it! Be confident in your creative or style thoughts.  You were hired for your styling and creative contribution and input as well as your "technical" styling ability and talent.  Your ideas could be used. If they are not ~ don't take it personal.  The positive thing is that you will be known as a contributor and troubleshooter ~ THAT is so valuable.  There are Traits and Skills Needed as a Photo Stylist and that is one ~ giving your creative input and being more of a creative advisor in addition to photo styling.

Don't worry about all being perfect before you offer your thoughts and advice ~ part of the creative process is the entire team giving thoughts. You want to be known as a contributor to the creative process ~ not just the "technical styler" ~ but the idea generator as well. Sometimes our need to be perfect holds us back.  I talk a little about that in Overcoming Perfection When I Was Hired in Flip Flops!  So, keep in mind these "tentative" phrases to avoid and share your thoughts and ideas without the fear of your ideas being (used.) or perfect.
